STARS Athletic Foundation

STARS Athletic Foundation

The renowned Foothill/San Gabriel Valley STARS Athletic Foundation is one of the best equipped sports learning centers of its type in Southern California. We pride ourselves in offering classes small enough to provide lots of individual attention to each student.

Instruction is given by a caring, highly-experienced, knowledgeable, enthusiastic staff in:

* Girls' gymnastics
* Boys' gymnastics
* Pre-school gymnastics
* Toddler pre-gymnastics
* Rhythmic gymnastics, tumbling
* Trampoline
* Sports-acrobatics
* Cheerleading
* Dance
* Wrestling

We also offer performance troupe (which involves learning group routines using dance, tumbling, costumes and hand props, for performances at shows, exhibitions, and major Southern California theme parks). Classes are offered from recreational through competitive levels, so that students work out with other students close in age and in skill level. A free try-out class and a money-back guarantee* is offered for any of the Gyms' programs.

About Us

STARS Athletic Foundation was incorporated as a non-profit, charitable purpose organization in 2002. The ongoing cost of the gym’s daily operations is sustained through its enrollment.  Its non-profit status enables STARS to apply for grants, donations and sponsorships which help reduce the cost of the program, both at the class and team levels; allows STARS to offer scholarships to deserving young athletes; helps to defray the costs of competition; and offsets the capital costs of improved equipment, thus making participation in the sports and related activities at STARS Athletic Foundation more widely accessible.  The Foundation welcomes support from the students’ families and friends, as well as from businesses and other patrons of youth sports.  Contributions are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.  These combined efforts join in helping to provide many young athletes with the opportunity to strive to achieve the goals they have set for themselves.  STARS Athletic Foundation is dedicated to allowing each athlete the opportunity of becoming the best they can, whatever that level of achievement might be.

STARS Athletic Foundation is deeply involved in community activities.  It has contracted with the city of Rosemead to provide that city’s Parks and Recreation programs in tumbling and gymnastics; and has performed without charge for many local businesses, schools, expos, shows and fairs.   STARS Athletic Foundation is a member of the Arcadia and San Gabriel Chambers of Commerce and an active participant in the San Gabriel Coordinating Council.  Free classes are offered through the summer reading programs of the Arcadia, San Marino, Alhambra, Temple City and San Gabriel libraries.  Scout troops can earn their sports badges at the Gym, and pre-schools and day care centers can take a field trip to the Gym.  The Gym also provides an outreach program, offering classes at pre-schools, day care centers, dance studios and elementary schools.  Affordable child care is planned for the fall of 2006.

If you would like further information about the programs offered by STARS Athletic Foundation, evaluation of a child prior to placement in the program, or wish to observe or try out a class, please call (626) 292-STARS (-7827)

Gymnastics Staff

STARS’ coaches have decades of combined coaching experience; have worked with athletes from pre-school through elite levels; and have trained numerous local, state, regional and national champions.  The coaching staff has been carefully selected on the basis of knowledge and teaching ability.  Because of our reputation for excellence, we have attracted aspiring students who come from as far away as Alta Loma, Sylmar and Victorville.

Gymnastics, Tumbling and Trampoline

Joanne Bockian, Executive Director and Head Coach of STARS Athletic Foundation

Ms. Bockian coaches all levels of the girls’ program from toddler pre-gymnastics through optional level gymnasts, boys’ classes, tumbling and trampoline; runs programs for the city of Rosemead, as well as mobile programs for local pre-schools, day care centers and dance studios; and acts as the Program Director for the gym.

She is a professional member of U.S.A.G., is U.S.A.G. safety certified, has U.S.A.G. Kinder Accreditation for Teachers (K.A.T.) certification, has completed Levels 1 and 2 of the U.S.A.G. Professional Developmental Program, and is a U.S.A.G. certified Skill Evaluator and Meet Director.

She has also received Level 5 women’s gymnastics judging certification.  She has served as the District and Sectional representative for the Central Inland Section to the Southern California Women’s Gymnastics Association, and has served as the Secretary for the State Tumbling and Trampoline association.  She is also a certified judge for tumbling, trampoline and double mini-trampoline.

Andria Lopez, Gymnastics Coach

Andria coaches the girls’ gymnastics, toddler pre-gymnastics and pre-school gymnastics, and trampoline programs.  A senior at Arcadia High School, Andria joined the STARS’ Athletic Foundation staff in 200_.  In addition to having trained in gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline,  Andria has an extensive background in music and dance, including both training and performance.

STARS Athletic Foundation is located in a modern 15,300 square foot building on the southeast corner of Las Tunas and Mission in the City of San Gabriel, just north of City Hall and the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium.  The location allows easy access both from city streets and from the 10 and 210 freeways.  Parking is readily available adjacent to the building.

The building is equipped with both heating and cooling systems to allow for comfortable year-‘round training.  It is clean and well-lit, and accessible to those with walkers or wheelchairs.  Seating for spectators is available both in individual chairs and in bleachers.

STARS Athletic Foundation takes pride in providing the best possible training equipment for the athletes who train at its facility.  The gymnastics programs provide equipment for both men and women; the pre-school gymnastics program has specially designed pre-school-size equipment so that smaller hands, feet and bodies can safely participate.  Rhythmic equipment is provided, thereby helping to reduce the cost to the participants, since most programs require each athlete to purchase their own equipment.  A raised wood dance floor, ballet bars and mirrors facilitate the dance programs.  A rebounding center, equipped with trampolines, double mini-trampolines and a tumbling strip allow for practice in those sports.  The gymnastics spring floor and the dance floor are also used by the cheerleading, flag, baton, martial arts and wrestling programs.

STARS Athletic Foundation constantly seeks to maintain, improve and upgrade its equipment so as to provide safe and proper training for the athletes who participate.
